Presentation of the project

Smart Moves -more physical activity in secondary education

The Smart Moves project aims to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour in secondary education.

The project produces diverse and encouraging fact-based material, develops practical tools together with specialists and students and spreads information to schools through various events and campaigns.

Background

The project started in 2014 as part of the Sports and Exercise Safety in Finland program (LiVE) begun in 2006 and coordinated by Tampere Research Centre of Sports Medicine. During its first two years the project’s emphasis was on decreasing sports injuries amongst students in vocational education.

In 2017 the project was expanded to cover all students in secondary education with the priority of increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour. Nowadays Smart Moves is coordinated by the UKK Institute and funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

The two previous projects kicked off under the LiVE program (Healthy Athlete and TEKO – Safety in School Sports) are still on-going among sports organizations and teams as well as in schools.

Tools for schools

The project produces online material available to anyone free of charge. The Smartmoves.fi website has been designed to play part in school’s everyday activities and is connected to the curriculum in a practical level. The website will be updated and completed gradually during the project.
