Mental well-being and working life

Everyone wants to do work that matters, and know how to do it. In addition, well-being at work is enhanced by the opportunity to influence the characteristics of one’s own work, and a sense of togetherness with the members of the work community.

Well-being at work is not just the absence of stress or exhaustion, but satisfaction, a sense of competence and feeling proud when succeeded. The joy of work is recognized by the fact that one can go to work in the morning with good spirit, and the coming day raises positive expectations. However, the joy of work varies depending on the job and working conditions.

Tips for mental well-being at work:

  • Exercise regularly, eat healthy and get enough sleep in your free time.
  • Take breaks during the work day.
  • Plan the use of time ahead.
  • Be active and learn new things.
  • Create strong social bonds.
  • Prioritize tasks, develop meaningful ways of working and distribute work evenly.
  • Discuss about the defects of the job with the manager.
  • If you feel overstrained, ask for help in time.

Get joy and support from the work community

Well-being at work is significantly increased by the feeling that people care about me and I care about my colleagues. Experiencing discrimination is detrimental to mental well-being.

You don’t need to be best friends with all your work and study friends, but you have to get along with everyone. There may be disagreements, but they must be dealt with constructively. Acknowledging others, asking company for a break and a respectful encounter are working life skills that it are important to be practiced already during your studies.

Even one night of poor sleep impairs functional ability and safety at work.
